The 81st session of the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 81) was held from March 18-22, 2024, and negotiations continued on greenhouse gas fuel intensity requirements, which may be combined with the greenhouse gas emission pricing system. Other important decisions include reporting transportation efficiency and finer particle fuel consumption data in the Data Collection System (DCS), as well as approving proposals to designate the Canadian Arctic and Norwegian Sea as nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur oxide (SOx), and particulate matter (PM) control zones.

Key points of the meeting:

The amendments to the Ballast Water Management Convention, MARPOL Protocol I, and MARPOL Annex VI have been passed.

Promote the development of new measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in order to achieve the strategic ambition of greenhouse gas.

Agree to develop a work plan for the regulatory framework of the shipside carbon capture system.

The proposal to designate the Canadian Arctic region and the Norwegian Sea as emission control zones for nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and particulate matter (PM) has been approved.
